ONE YEAR SINCE I STARTED DRAWING

One of the things I find interesting about art, is that sometimes you don’t really notice how much you’re improving until you go back and look at your earlier work. It’s now one year since I started drawing. so I thought I’d go and have a look.

I can remember drawing things sometimes and thinking, “I will never draw anything as good as this again,” but I look at some of them same drawings now and ask. “What was I thinking!”.

It’s really strange; I was sure they looked good lol I’m hoping that in 12 months time I will look at what I’m producing now and have the same feelings.

Faith from Mirrors Edge 12 month Drawing progress, by Artist Sophie Lawson

The above photo shows two of my drawings from the same reference photo, showing Faith from Mirrors Edge. The one on the left is from April 2013, the one on the right is from February 2014. I feel the biggest improvement is in my proportions and shading skills, which is mainly due to studying from the book How to Draw Lifelike Portraits from photographs by Lee Hammond. Lee Hammond introduced Tortillions into my life, and they’re now one of my recommended art tools.

I would urge you to take a few moments from time to time and go revisit some of your earlier work. Especially if you don’t feel like you’re making any progress; you might just be surprised :)
