BLOG CREATE A CUSTOM CARD HOLDER

by Kevin Preston | 14th November 2015

Something a little different his week. I recently went to London MCM comic con, and saw lots of anime inspired oyster card holders for sale. Even when I got back home I was still thinking about them. I wanted a Persona 4 one but I couldn’t find any on ebay, than I thought, ‘I wonder if you can create your own one?’

So I searched around and found ownster.co.uk ‘oh my!’ I thought, ‘I can create my own holder!’ Suddenly a Persona 4 one didn’t seem as interesting, for I now wanted a KevsArt one :) On the website they’re £4.99, but if you visit ownster’s ebay store, you can save £1. So £3.99, with free postage, for a custom card holder. A bargain!

OWNSTER.CO.UK – HOW IT WORKS

I first played around with using some of my drawings, but I decided I wanted to keep it simple, just a pink holder with my KevsArt logo in grey. I made my simple design up in Photoshop, uploaded it to ownster, hit submit and a few days later my KevsArt travel card holder arrived in the post. The whole process was flawless.

The print area is listed on the site as 210mm x 71mm, so all I did was create a file in Photoshop of 210mm x 71mm and made my basic design. You could however gather a bunch of images and upload them all to the site, so you don’t need to know Photoshop to create one of these.

ONCE YOU’RE HAPPY, SAVE YOUR DESIGN

As you can see, once the custom travel card holder option is selected, it’s just a case of choosing the template you want, uploading you’re image/s, viewing the live preview and saving the design once you’re happy. The whole process is very simple, and just because the site lists it as a travel card holder, doesn’t mean that’s what you have to use it for. You can use it for bank cards, ID cards, reward cards, business cards or any cards you fancy. I’m going to be using mine for my bus pass, but in the images below I placed a couple of my business cards inside and they fit perfect.

THE FINISHED PRODUCT

OVERALL

I’m very happy with the finished product. It’s nice and simple, like I wanted, and the quality of both the material and printing is of a high standard. Very impressive for the price. I love it so much it inspired me to write a blogpost about it, and in fact I’m already planning my next one. An Emily Browning one using my drawing, with a black insert :)

This brings me onto my only minor niggle. The limited range of insert colours, I would have loved a light grey insert with this pink card holder, but I went with the standard white as the available colours were not appropriate for my image. Ownster insert colours come in; black, dark blue, light blue, orange, three shades of red, green and yellow. So this is my only little niggle, I think a grey insert would have looked lovely on my card holder!

Ownster also create custom notebooks … I really want one! I’ve emailed them to see if they can do plain paper ones to use as sketchbooks! I’ll let you know what they say, hopefully they can make it happen. I highly recommend Ownster, they get a big thumbs up from me :)

UPDATE

Artem form Ownster emailed me this reply, with regards the custom sketchbooks –

“No, unfortunately, we don’t have notebooks with plain paper at the moment,
but we will definitely take it into account. Thank you for your interest.”
